Hey Oppo!

Over the past few months I have been trolling the internet to find myself the perfect new car. I am currently 1 year out of College, and I work in sales job that requires me to drive a sizable amount. I also need to be able to tote around my companies suppliers, so the interior needs to be a pleasant place ride

This search puts me in a category where lots of young professionals find themselves in- Looking for a fun car, that has a nice interior, gets good gas mileage, has modest insurance costs, and is relatively inexpensive. So,

Must get Decent-Good Gas Mileage.

Must have Leather Interior

Needs to be Lower Displacement (Insurance costs)

Runs in the 28-33k Range

Must be Tuneable

So, this has brought me to two OPPOTIONS

The MK7 GTI- 230 HP ———- 30K

Kinja'd!!!

SE Package - Leather Seats, Sun Roof

DSG- For daily driveability for no performance loss

Lighting Package

Performance Pack- For the Limited Slip Diff, to reduce the front wheel driveyness.

Aftermarket- APR Tune, Wheels & Tires, Ect...

The Eco-Boost Mustang- 310 HP ——— 31.5K

Kinja'd!!!

Premium Package

Stick Shift- Because the Auto Sucks (Apparently)

Recaro Seats

Aftermarket- Programmable Tune (Cobb/Bama, Wheels & Tires, Ect...

I am currently leading towards the MUSTANG, due to the higher performance ceiling and sportier looks. However, the ease of the dual-clutch and practicality of the GTI is not to be underestimated. I know people will say you can get a Base 5.0 for the same amount of money- But remember that fuel efficiency and mild insurance costs are a must since I will be a 1 vehicle driver under the age of 25.

Which do you think is the better choice?

I would personally go with the GTI.

RWD always beats FWD, but I’d also never buy a 4 cylinder Mustang because you’re leaving so much potential on the table. The other usual suspects include WRX, used Golf R or STI or S3, upcoming Focus RS.

GTI is an excellent all-around car. I could personally never have a Mustang as an only car.

Just skip the DSG nonsense ;) I DD my 6MT Golf R. And personally I think there are better tunes out there, particularly UM or GIAC.

I prefer smaller cars myself, so I say GTI. Especially so with the LSD. I would probably go stick though. Hot hatches and sticks go together like beans and toast.

Just not generally a fan of the styling IMO. The RS is sweet, but I need to make the purchase in the next few months and there is no word on price.

Coming from the guy who sold his GTI to buy a Saab, I’d get the GTI. I purchased mine in a very similar scenario but I just got a bit bored driving something new. The versatility of the GTI will outshine the Mustang everyday and the best part is nobody thinks your trying to be anything in a GTI. People know mustangs and think the one they rented from Hertz was “fast,” so the car will garner more attention in that respect.

Given your needs. The GTI would definitely be a fit. I’m not too sure about insurance though. But then again a 4 cylinder mustang can't be less to insure than a GTI imo

If you need to carry people and drive a lot I’d check out a Dodge Charger. Base you can get for like $25K or less (I got one that stickered for $31K for $21K with 4000 miles on it last year). It’s comfy for long trips, roomy, 292HP, RWD and gets excellent mileage. Leather might by a couple of grand though, but the base model is pretty decent, even with the cloth.

GTI would be the smart one, especially with more than one passenger. Ever sat in the back of the Mustang? Ever wish you had no legs?

I had a sales job that had me travel about 50,000 miles per year. The GTI, I had a mkV was a very pleasant place to be. You would be very surprised at how much stuff you can actually fit in that vehicle when you need to. Not sure where you are located, but I am in the north east and once I put snowshoes on the VW, it was like a tank in the snow. If you can afford a EB with the Premium package (unnecessary) and the Recaro seats (uncomfortable on the street according to most people) you can afford the GT. It’s worth it.

GTI, but an SE, PP, LP will get pricey...though I recommend you add the DCC if you go that route.

A better choice would be something much less expensive than $30k.

As someone in a similar position, I’d choose the GTI but w/ the manual. The DSG is actually kinda jerky around town and costs more to buy and maintain. Plus, the GTI will leave a better impression on the people you drive around (i.e. it’s much more ‘professional’).

If you have to carry more than one other person, the Mustang isn’t the best option. Full sized adults don’t really fit in the back very well, and business people do not appreciate crawling in 2-door coupes.

Also, for a luxury type car you get the best deals on used cars. For the price of your choices you could easily find a lightly used, not too old M3 (the 4-doors are usually cheaper too!). If you are worried about repairs, there are always a few on Carmax so you could always follow Doug DeMuro’s lead.

It combines the best parts of the two cars you are considering; however, the gas and insurance costs would be higher (a small price to pay for a V8 super sedan that literally is the benchmark for the category).

Another option, a used Audi A3/4 and a fun weekend car like an s2000, the two combined would cost about the same $30k and you’d have 2 better cars. If you were entertained enough by the Audi, which is like a really awesome golf anyway, you could save a ton.

Just because I’m in the same boat and am looking for almost the same thing, here are my wants. Go CPO or carmax and get an extended warranty.

I dunno as Golfs gain popularity people will start to make assumptions about the people that drive them. Everytime I see a GTI I want to goad the driver into a race just to see how quick they are.

Ditching is a strong word. 2.5 years and 50k miles later it now has 140k on it. The time has come to try new things out.
